Richard "Dickie" Shafer

Richard “Dickie” Shafer, 96, of Troy, Missouri, passed away on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, in Mercy Hospital St. Louis, Missouri. He was born on April 8, 1927, in Troy, Missouri, and was the son of Emmett and Mabel (Clare) Shafer. Dickie was united in marriage to Vera Ruth Holmes on September 9, 1950 and to this union one son was born. Dickie graduated from Buchanan High. He served his country during the World War II in the United States Navy from May 25, 1945 until he was honorably discharged on July 31, 1946. In his earlier years he worked in the trucking industry, went to work at McDonnell Douglas and shortly after started farming in Lincoln County. He was an active part of the community, serving on various boards, including: Farmers Elevator Board, SCS Board, Extension Council, Leaders Honor Roll, Masonic Lodge, with 70 years of membership, Kiwanis with over 25 years of dedication and First Christian Church Member. The Shafer Family was honored at the Missouri State Fair as a Farm Family. Dickie liked going to tractor pulls and traveling with his wife Ruthie to Las Vegas. Dickie looked forward to Thursday mornings at Lincoln County Veterans Coffee Talk, where they would honor him as a WWII Veteran. You would see Dickie every morning at the coffee shop surrounded by close friends at the liar’s table. When you would see Dickie, he always had a smile on his face and a story to tell. His words of wisdom will be missed. Dickie is survived by his son, Jay Shafer and wife Rhonda of Troy, MO; granddaughter, Jaime Carroz and husband Jeremy of Troy, MO; one great-grandson, Spencer Carroz; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Emmett and Mabel Shafer; wife, Ruthie Shafer; one brother, Kenneth Shafer and one sister, Dorothy Bendixen. Family and friends will be received from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 4, 2024 at KEMPER-KEIM Family Funeral Chapel located at 351 Monroe Street Troy, MO 63379.
