Dr. Gene Paul Smith

March 5, 1943 - September 17, 2020

Dr. Gene Paul Smith, 77, of Louisiana, Missouri fortified with sacraments of the holy mother church on Thursday, September 17, 2020 at Pike County Memorial Hospital in Louisiana, Missouri. He was born on March 5, 1943 in St. Joseph, Missouri, a son of the late Charles and Velma (Carr) Smith. Dr. Smith was united in marriage to Betty Henebry on August 19, 1989 in Troy, Missouri. Dr. Smith graduated from Northeast High School in Kansas City, MO. He served his country in the United States Army, in the military police corps in Germany from 1960 to 1963 and he was honorably discharged. Dr. Smith earned his bachelor’s degree in education and biology at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, AR. He attended medical school at the Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kansas City, MO, where he received his Doctor of Osteopathy Medical degree, before completing his rotating internship at the Normandy Osteopathic Hospital in St. Louis, MO. He truly enjoyed practicing medicine for 47 years both in private practice and in emergency medicine. Dr. Smith served as emergency medical director at Lincoln County Memorial Hospital in Troy, MO and Pike County Hospital in Louisiana, MO. Dr. Smith was very dedicated and always available for his patients, he became very close with his patients with his private practice in Clarksville, MO and Bowling Green, MO. Dr. Smith loved to fish, he always kept a fishing pole in car and had an eye for a good fishing spot. He was an avid reader who loved to learn. Dr. Smith was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Louisiana, Missouri, where he was member of the Knights of Columbus as a 4th Degree. He never met a stranger, he was the best storyteller, who loved to laugh and share memories with the ones he loved. He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Betty Anne Smith of Louisiana, MO; three daughters and four sons: Paul Smith (Brenda) of UT, Kimberly Crockett (Davey) of Dexter, MO, Cheryl Smith of Maysville, MO, Ted Wightman (Christi) of Olathe, KS, Jill Dunard (Randy) of St. Louis, Brian Dunard of Murfreesboro, TN and Ken Dunard of Bend, OR; one sister, Charlene Smith-Hill (Jesse) of Kansas City, MO; grandchildren: Eathan Smith, Elizabeth Smith, Rosalene Smith, Tristan Smith, Ariel Smith and Direk Smith; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Richard Henebry of Troy, MO; Alice Amann of Hawk Point, MO; Donna Reale and husband Jim of Defiance, MO and Roberta Trost and husband Mike of Defiance, MO; nieces and nephews, including: Carrie, Kelly and Kacey; very special friend and colleague, Dr. Jan Onik and very special friends Patty and Allan Bolton. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Velma Smith; one sister, Laura Mills, three brothers: Donald Williams, Chuck Williams and James Smith; mother-in-law and father-in-law: Gladys Geneva “Gever” Robert “Bob” Henebry; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-laws: Kenneth Henebry, Mary Jane Henebry, Penny Henebry, Craig Amann and one nephew, Heath Amann. Family and friends will be received from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, September 21, 2020 at KEMPER-MILLARD-KEIM Family Funeral Chapel located at 41 Farm Lane Hawk Point, MO 63349. Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church located at458 Main Street Hawk Point, MO 63349. Interment will be held with full military honors at the Mashek Cemetery in Hawk Point, MO. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made American Cancer Society or Masses in care of KEMPER-MILLARD-KEIM Family Funeral Chapel; P.O. Box 222, Troy, MO 63379.
