Sarah Cortelyou (Damron)

Sarah L. Cortelyou (Damron), 94, of Troy, Missouri, passed away on March 30, 2012 at Lincoln County Nursing and Rehab in Troy, Missouri. She was born July 21, 1917 in Elsberry, Missouri a daughter of the late James N. and Mary Melissa Damron. She was united in marriage to Barclay T. Cortelyou on September 19, 1940 at her parent’s residence in Elsberry, Missouri. He preceded her in death on May 23, 1980. Sarah attended grade school in Elsberry, graduated from Elsberry High School in 1935 and continued her education at Paris Junior College in Paris, Texas toward becoming a dietician. She was employed at Forest Keeling Nursery, Bank of Lincoln County in Elsberry, Missouri and did clerical work during tax time for Nathan Ricks. Sarah was the first person in Troy, to place an outgoing call on a dial telephone. She was raised in the Methodist religion and after marriage joined the Presbyterian faith. Sarah was a member of Evageline Club. She enjoyed working cross word puzzles, watching the Cardinal’s play baseball and reading especially, “No Time For Sargents.” Sarah had amazing abilities when it came to crocheting, knitting and sewing. She had a great sense of humor, was quick witted and was known for her morning whistling. Sarah’s most favorite time was spent with her husband, her children and especially her grandchildren. She is survived by her loving children: Carmen Cortelyou of Troy, Missouri, Stephen Cortelyou of Troy, Missouri and Sallie Cortelyou of Maryland Heights, Missouri; two granddaughters: Erin S. Dunn and Tracey Creech, nieces, nephews and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers: Lloyd M. Damron and Edward O. Damron. Friends will be received from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 7, 2012 at KEMPER-MARSH-MILLARD Family Funeral Home / TROY CHAPEL. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 7, 2012 at the Chapel. Officiating the service will be Pastor Steve Pinnell. Inurnment will be held at Troy City Cemetery.
