Evelyn Leona Thurmon

Evelyn Leona Thurmon, 85, of Troy, Missouri, passed away surrounded by her family on Thursday, December 21, 2017, at her daughter’s residence in Troy, Missouri. She was born on September 3, 1932 in Frankford, Missouri, a daughter of Henry Simon and Elva Rachel (East) Mize. Evelyn was united in marriage to the love of her life, Thomas Eugene “Gene” Thurmon on March 11, 1949 in Pocahontas, Arkansas and to this union three daughters were born. Gene preceded her in death on June 16, 2010. Evelyn was primarily a homemaker and worked as an administrative assistant for the Troy City Hall for several years. After Gene and Evelyn took over the family business, Troy Marble and Granite, she worked in all aspects of the business. She was a member of the Monuments Builders of North America. Evelyn always put her family’s needs before her own. She was very active in her children and grandchildren’s lives. Evelyn was a room mother for her daughters all through school. She enjoyed embroidering various projects and sewing, making clothing for not only her but for her family. Evelyn was known for her delicious meals, cookies and pies, everyone knew the rule, you were only allowed one piece, so Gene could enjoy the rest. Gene and Evelyn rode through all 50 states on their motorcycle. She was a professional shopper that would drive to Iowa or Lake of the Ozarks just to shop. Evelyn was always that safe place to land, knowing she was there no matter what and gave the best back scratches. She is survived by her children: Gloria Jean Scheibe of Warrenton, MO and Debbie Jo Thurmon of Troy, MO; one sister, Sara Kerr of Dardanelle, AR; seven wonderful grandchildren: Richard Scheibe (Sarah) of Warrenton, MO, Jenny Jean D’Olympia (Morgan) of Canton, MA, Paul Scheibe (Billie) of Warrenton, Rachel Dunard (Jason) of Troy, MO Kathy Pool (Paul) of Elsmere, KY, Zach Simpson of Troy, MO and Samantha Simpson of Troy, MO; fourteen great-grandchildren: Liam, Emmitt, Noah, Austen, Ella, Jasmine, Bethany, Natalie, Michael, Lillyan, Allyson, William, Jacoby and Jada; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Joe Thurmon (Faye), Johnny D. Thurmon (Connie) and Irene Trail (Bobby); caregivers: Cari, Becky, Peggy, Carol, Sarah and Sharon; numerous relatives and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, Thomas Eugene “Gene” Thurmon, one daughter, Diane Lynn Thurmon, two grandsons: Joe and Michael Brodt, and siblings: Ruthie Baker, Glenn Harlinger, Charles Harlinger and Leo Mize.
